Hello and thank you for excepting me i was told to contact you by a lady who recently lost her husband but found a great help in your community, my wife has anal cancer and after a pet scan now found another on her liver she has just had a stoma fitted and is due home tomorrow they have told her she is going to have radiotherapy that is all we know i have asked the doctor on the ward but he said that’s all he knows and to wait to see the oncologist i am really worried and scared for her at the beginning the surgeon said you will be having chemotherapy and radiotherapy together and won’t need a operation now its all changed after the pet scan yes i know we have to be guided by the oncologist but no one is saying anything no mention of chemotherapy Thank you

  • Hello Peter, welcome to the group.

There are definitely some people here who will be able to give you more information about their treatment following stoma. I am very sorry I don't have any more than that, but I just wanted to say you have come to the right place for practical advice, and some virtual hugs for you and your lovely wife.

Please let us know how it goes, and check in occasionally - as I say, I'm sure you'll get someone here shortly who can give you the details you need.

    With best wishes

  • Hello Peter

I am so sorry to hear of your wife's diagnosis and can totally understand the confusion and fear that you are both going through right now.  I had spread to my lung and underwent a six month course of chemotherapy before going on to have lung ablations and then the combined radiotherapy/chemotherapy.  I would make a list of questions to ask the oncologist on her next visit, hopefully you will have a rapport with s/he and they can outline the treatment plan.

I would be guessing if I knew what they intend to do but it could be that they are waiting to see if the radiotherapy clears or shrinks the tumour in her liver.  I do know that often a certain path of treatment opens the way for further intervention as no one doctor knows how a person will react to treatment.

And I don't know where you are, but she can always ask for a second opinion - I wanted to when I was diagnosed until I found out that the oncologist treating me is one of the world's experts on anal cancer so I stayed put.

Sending a big hug to you both, please let us know how she gets on.

    Irene xx
