Radiation proctitis

Hi, I'm Lynne - I had anal cancer about 12 years ago, treated with radio and chemotherapy very successfully - but about a few years later I was diagnosed with radiation proctitis. I've had some help from the GP and the hospital and been prescribed foam enemas from time to time, which do seem to help in the short term. However, this week I've had 3 episodes of uncontrollable diarrhoea when out walking the dog and I live in dread of meeting anyone on my walk. Does anyone else have the same problem and what are your coping mechanisms? I am at my wits end.

  • Hi  I'm really sorry to hear that you are dealing with this side effect, it can be so debilitating. Whilst I don't personally suffer from this condition (yet), I am aware that in serious cases that don't respond to medications, surgery may be considered. I would definitely consider contacting your GP and asking for a referral to a specialist as this condition is now impacting your quality of life.  Hopefully someone else will read this post who does suffer from this and be able to give further advice. Bev.

  • Hi Lynfev

i was diagnosed with  radiation proctitis in feb this year after a sigmoidoscopy following episodes of passing blood large amounts. I struggle with chronic constipation despite laxatives and continuous episodes of rushing to the loo often too late. I have now resorted to continence pants and waiting for a call back from the colorectal nurse to ask for a review. I am 4 yrs since chemoradiation therapy. I even have stopped meeting up in public with friends due to the uncontrol.  I can’t suggest anything at the min but will feed back once I’ve seen oncologist.

  • Hi Bev - so sorry I didn't get back to you earlier. Thank you for taking the time to reply - I will consider getting a referral if things don't get any better. At the moment (fingers crossed) it seems to be OK as long as I don't eat too many vegetables and stay off bread. Thanks again Lynne

  • Hi Pete, I hope things get sorted for you soon when you see the colorectal nurse - I know how it feels to be constantly worried about meeting people. Do let me know how you get on. Lynne
