Hi everyone ,

it’s a year since I was diagnosed with anal cancer and a cancer in my rectal space .. I was given the all clear at Xmas but was having side effects that the oncologist said were normal but no advice ,,

since Xmas I have been in hospital twice with dehydration from sickness and loose stools and sent away with imodium and anti sick tabs .
I’ve kept the food diary , I’ve done everything to keep this at bay but unfortunately it’s taking over my road to recovery .. has anyone experienced this and come out the other side symptom free or at least in control ?
take care everyone

  • Hi Chrissie49

I'm sorry you are having problems. Could your oncologist refer you to a dietician who specialises in cancer patients, or I know some of the cancer charitys have them it may help. Also don't know if you use instagram but this lady's page is interesting re food @drnashawinters . Sending hugs. Xx

  • Hi  ,

I’m so sorry you’re still suffering these awful side effects. I know a few on this forum have had great success following the FODMAP diet to deal with digestive & bowel issues. I agree with    that a referral to a dietitian would be useful at this point.

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

  • Hi Bungle ,

hope you well ? I was under a dietician for 6 months but nothing was conclusive .. I’m now wondering if there is bile malabsorption or something else going on .. I have an appointment with my oncologist next month , these late effects worse than the treatment .. of course it could be nothing to do with the AC but I’ve had many blood tests to no avail !!

    take care

  • Thanks Nicki … it’s something in my diet , for sure but can’t get to the bottom of it .. same food can cause different reactions .. the dietician has referred me back to consultant !!!
    take care

  • Oh right so you’ve already seen a dietitian? I’m almost 7 years post treatment & there are still a few foods that I can’t tolerate any more, they don’t cause such adverse reactions as you’ve been experiencing but the reactions do vary from a little bloating to nausea & stomach ache & atrocious gas!! Coffee is a culprit strangely especially decaf! I’m finding recently that I can now tolerate the odd cup with not too much repercussion.

I really hope you get some answers soon.

  • Hello Chrissie

This sounds really debilitating (and it must be with two hospital admissions) and I am really sorry that you are going through this.  It would be a good idea to make a note of everything that is happening to you and tell the oncologist to see what they suggest.  Unfortunately some oncologists are totally involved with the treatment and cure, but are less well versed in how to treat the side effects that can continue afterwards.  However, I am hopeful that if the dietician has referred you back to the consultant that more searching investigation will be ordered to find out what is going on.

Please let us know how you get on.

    Big hug

  • Hi Irene ,

hope all well with you and family ?
I have booked a gp appointment to find out if these digestive issues are something else ?
everything points to the after effects of chemoradiotherapy and my diet would be the first port of call … thanks for your reply , your help and your empathy … will keep in touch and maybe some answers will help others going through the same ..

take care , big hugs right back
