Hi all, just wanted to write this in case anyone is facing APR surgery or has recently gone through it and now recovering.
I had APR surgery for anal cancer on 27th July 2023. It’s now 2nd Jan and I have just ticked off my first day back at work. I was hoping to go back in November originally (I don’t know why but that seemed the best idea when I first went off!) but my body had other ideas and my wound on my bum dehisced and took nearly six months to heal in the end. I won’t lie - it has been literally a pain in the arse to get this far. However it CAN be done. Having the surgery is stressful for you, difficult for your family and may seem like the last resort but I promise it is doable. Having a stoma takes some getting used to but it’s doable. There might be complications like I have had but it’s doable and hopefully you can come out the other side and be OK.
I’m nervous about an upcoming scan but I am proud of myself for getting through a major major surgery and coming out the other side.
Happy New Year to you all and please get in touch with me if you ever have any queries about this surgery, I found threads like this very useful after my diagnosis.

Hi Wendy,
how are you feeling today after the infusion? Did they pick that up from your pre-op?
I really hope you get a date soon, the waiting is just horrible.
xx
Hi I don't feel too bad but it's the waiting
Yes my bloods were low after the chemo and after the pre op they've said I'm anemic I suppose there being cautious as it's major surgery and it does help with recovery xx
Hi Claire
I've finally got my date for surgery 25th March.i feel like I've been waiting for ever but ar least I've got something to focus on now xx
Wendy
Oh finally, Wendy! That’s great news.
You’ve had such a long wait so I’m really pleased it’s moving on for you.
Yes, focus on keeping fit and well for the next few weeks and hopefully the time will go quickly xxx
Thanks Claire any tips for hospital.how long were you in ? Xx
They said I’d be in for 2 weeks but I escaped on the 8th day - have you already got a stoma though? I had mine formed at the same time so had to prove I could manage it before they let me go.
Definitely take some headphones and make sure you’ve got some good podcasts or audio books to listen to as the ward is very noisy, and an eye mask to block the light out so you can get some rest.
I also bought a she wee from Amazon as you can’t sit down to pee for a while. Practice using it before you go in!!
I’ll have a think if there was anything else xx
Yes I've got a stoma the shee wee sounds interesting I'll have to look into it and the eye mask thanks for the tips x
Wendy, you must be so relieved. The time will probably drag but it is probably a good idea to have as much prepared at home so that you can really recuperate. We are all rooting for you and are here should you need that virtual hand-holding!

Hi Wendy (Weekend Walker ), I’m so pleased you’ve finally got a date! You must be so relieved, as you say you’ve got something to focus on now & it leaves you a couple of weeks to do some last minute prep. It’s been a long drawn out process for you but not too much longer now & you’ll be able to begin your recovery.
I’ll be thinking of you.
Nicola
Thank you .I know its a complicated surgery but I need it so have to have it and recovery is long but it's better than sitting waiting
I'll keep everyone posted and thanks for the support snd good wishes xx Wendy
