Hi all, whatever I do I can’t get my heat around having surgery an my anal canal removed plus having a stoma I’m so worried about it?? Post op an after the op, no idea what to do or think anymore

  • Thank you for replying! I will have the surgery because he said I have no other choice it just really frightens me that’s all! I might have to have my vagina removed he doesn’t know yet till he examines me on Monday to see how far it has gone up! I’ve got an appointment also Monday to see the stoma nurse but maybe have to change it with having been put to sleep same day, I’m hoping my ex partner will help me when I leave hospital but I think he will! Did you have to have skin grafts I don’t know how it works?

  • No, I didn’t have any skin grafts because everything was removed from the inside, and I don’t have a Barbie butt. Nor did I have vaginal reconstruction. But my cancer was cervical, not anal so I had an open abdominal incision to get at everything in there! I didn’t have cancer in my bowel, but asked for my colon to be removed while they were in there! It was quite damaged by my previous radiotherapy and I wanted to try and give myself the best chance of not having another recurrence.

So apart from having stomas, I don’t look any different on the outside. I wasn’t one for asking questions beforehand, but I’d recommend to anyone else to ask about exactly what will be done and how it will be done. Just make sure you ask about skin grafts, reconstruction if you do have your vagina removed and how things might look afterwards.

  • I’m not sure if I do need skin grafts but he said he needs to find a plastic surgeon to help him…not sure what that means!

  • Yes, I would assume in your type of surgery a plastic surgeon is required. Certainly that is the case when vaginal reconstruction is involved, but make sure you ask about their role in this and what exactly the plastic surgeon will be doing.
