Went to see oncologist this week for results of Pet Ct scan and MRI scan.  Was greeted with have really good news for you,  so expected her to say I was clear, but she said she was very happy with scans and everything was reducing as it should be.  Having an MRI scan in 3 months. Has anyone else had anything like this said to them?  Felt a bit deflated.

  • Still good news! I haven’t started treatment yet so I can’t put myself in your shoes, but I think I’ll be satisfied with anything positive. Keep going! You got this!!

  • Hi  I'm sorry you didn't get the news you wanted and can understand how you are feeling. I was told that the 6 month scans are the important ones as the treatment is still working. Easier said than done I know but try not to worry I think quite a few people aren't clear at 3 months and then get the all clear at 6 months. Sending hugs. Xx

  • Hi  ,  I’m sorry that it wasn’t the news you were hoping for but I agree with everything that Bungle has said in that the 6 month scans seem to be the ones that give the definitive answer as to whether you’ve had a complete response to the treatment. Remember the radiotherapy continues doing its thing for quite some time following that last treatment therefore there’s still time for this to resolve. Just an added thought, the radiotherapy causes a heck of a lot of inflammation too so maybe your oncologist is being cautious around this too if there’s a lot of inflammation visible on your scans. I completely empathise with your disappointment & feelings of deflation though.

Sending lots of healing thoughts your way.

  • Thank you, you’re right and positivity is key!! Good luck with your treatment ! Xx

  • Thanks  I think I had my hopes up, well actually I don’t really know what I expected! Anyway Oncologist was very happy as she said with the way things were going and after she examined me said the same, so I will stay positive, thank you for your kindness xx

  • Thanks   I think you could be right, I had Pet Ct scan and the Oncologist said there was no spread so that was good. She had brought my appointment forward as it was originally beginning of November to give me the good news. I think I should concentrate on her saying she was very happy with results and to go and celebrate as it’s our Anniversary this weekend. Only need an MRI in three month. So I need to get the positive head back on ! Thank you for your reassuring words xx

  • Hello

Deep breaths!  This often happens, the radiotherapy is still working and continues for months after treatment ends.  I know it is a hard pill to swallow, we all desperately want to hear 'total response to treatment' but it can be a slow process.  This can be so hard for the patient, another nail-biting three months to wait, feeling that you are living under the Sword of Damocles.  There are quite a few people on the forum who experienced this.

I hope the next three months aren't too stressful for you and please remember we are always here to support at any time and share your worry.

    Big hug

    Irene xx

  • Hi Flowerpot 26, I totally understand how you are feeling right now and send a virtual hug.  I also recently had my 3 month scan in September and was told it was nearly gone but not completely but I was hoping for a complete response as I felt well. My oncologist was very pleased with progress though and said not everyone gets a complete response at 3 months, he said the treatment is still active which is why they do a 6 month scan. He said the six month scan gives a clearer picture. When I'm feeling anxious and to settle my overactive mind, I remind myself how  positive he was to the response so far.  I wish you all the best. x

  • Hi

As always thank you for your words of advice and wisdom. I need to stay positive, as the oncologist said she is very happy, I need to remember that !
Your words of kindness are really appreciated,

    Hugs to you xx

  • Hi

The really good thing about this forum is the people!
Like you I have an overactive mind as probably most of us with this awful disease do. You know exactly how I felt as I do you, I realise I need to take the reassuring words from the oncologist and concentrate on them as you have said.

Hoping for a good response for us and everyone, I too wish you the very best.

    Thank you

    Sending you hugs xx
