Trouble sleeping

Morning All

I’m 3 weeks post APR op for anal cancer and now into my 2nd week back at home recovering. Trouble is I’m having terrible issues with sleep at night , lucky if I get 3-4 hours. I’m absolutely shattered when I go to bed but then I just lay there and my legs feel achy/dull and I can’t get comfortable. Anyone got any tips that might help please? I’m taking pain relief before I go to bed, having a shower, putting magnesium spray on my legs and propping myself and legs up with pillows.

Many thanks

  • Hello

You really do have my sympathy.  There is nothing worse than when sleep is elusive and the nights seem so long and the mind goes into overdrive.

If you are only three weeks out you are in the very early stages of recovery from major surgery and you are doing all the right things.  Have you tried taking a magnesium supplement as well?  That is supposed to help with sleep.  I haven't had APR surgery but also have difficulty in getting comfortable due to achy hips.  I bought a memory foam mattress topper and it has made things a bit better but not totally.  As fatigue is an ongoing issue for me, if I feel the need I often nap during the day; I don't sleep for longer than an hour otherwise it affects falling asleep at night.

I am really sorry that I can't come up with more concrete suggestions as you must be so exhausted; I hope that some others add to this thread with some suggestions (I will be really interested too).

I hope your healing goes well and you get some relief very soon.

    Gentle hug

    Irene xx
