Hello all. I am 1 week post radiotherapy, but am struggling with some side effects. Any words of wisdom or additional things people have done to help recover i would be truly grateful.
I have horrendous radiotherapy cystitis its absolute agony weeing . Im on pain relief, I got potassium citrate and drink gallons but its awful going to the toilet. Has anyone else had this? Any extra things that might help?
I also have lots of swelling down below and have a weird yellow sticky discharge (sorry much info) anyone else had this ? Please tell me it goes quickly
Hi LM84 ,
Firstly congratulations on completing your treatment, that’s an achievement in itself.
You really are at the business end of this now but hopefully a few more days & you’ll begin to start to see improvements.
I also suffered from radiation cystitis, I kept a jug of water by the loo & literally poured it over myself as I was having a pee just to dilute things so it didn’t sting so much. If you have a sitz bath then you could go in that too. You’re doing right with the potassium citrate, I also drank sugar free cranberry juice & lots of diluted barley water.
I have no personal experience with the discharge although I did have the swelling, I don’t think the discharge is uncommon though as I’ve heard it mentioned on here a few times, just keep an eye on it & if you suspect any infection let your treating team know straight away as you could do without that on top of everything else right now.
Hopefully others will be along soon to share their experiences.
Sending lots of healing thoughts your way.
Nicola
Hi LM84 , I drank 3 litres of water a day and used unsweetened cranberry juice by Biona. It is tart but helped so, so much. I also used a peribottle everytime I did a wee to dilute everything further, so spraying with the bottle when you pee. It might be worth getting your team to check if it is a wee infection as that is also very possible xx I do hope you get relief soon xx
Hello LM84
You really aren't alone with your struggles - we have all been through this. And so well done, you mightn't feel it right now you are through to the other side. But this immediate aftermath of treatment can be very very challenging. Do you have a Sitzbath? Amazon will deliver tomorrow, a bidet that sits on your loo and you can fill with lukewarm water and bath your poor rear end. Or use it as a loo, go in water, both weeing and emptying bowels and it really is less painful. And the Sitzbath is just plastic and easily flushed and disinfected.
And please keep in touch with your team; you may well need extra pain relief, now is not the time to be a hero, take everything that they offer to help. And if opioids, they cause constipation (fast) so take Laxido alongside.
And all sorts of strange mucus comes from every orifice in the nether regions, if you are concerned pleased mention it to your doctor but I think we would all say for this moment in time this is your new normal - but honestly, it does go.
Please keep in touch and let us know how you are coping.
Big hug
Irene xx
Hi again LM84 , my cystitis came & went to be honest, my first episode was around week 2-3 into my treatment & then again after treatment had finished, I would have it a few days then it would pass, it takes a completely different path to bacterial cystitis.
I hope you get some relief soon.
Nicola
Hi LM84 well done on getting through treatment, now rest and recover. I didn't get cystitis but I did have mucous discharge from my bottom for the last week of treatment and it probably continued for a week after treatment finished, i cant remember exactly. I was told that we all produce it all the time to help stools pass but the treatment had made it go into overdrive as such and it was nothing to worry about. Sending hugs. Xx
