Hi all. I am week 3 of chemotherapy/radiotherapy for anal cancer and external SCC lesion. So the area down below is painful at the best of times. However today my bladder feels swollen and extremely painful to start to pee. It’s not a UTI as pee does not smell nor is it bright yellow. I try to drink 3 or 4 pints of water a day but am also finding that hard has anyone else experienced this and how long does it last
Hello..I'd say this started for me about week 3 and lasted a few weeks. It was uncomfortable to say the least. I kept drinking lots of water and just had to take it slow when I was weeing. Are you on drinking protocol with treatment? The wee after treatment was always the worst and in a morning sometimes I had to wee in the bath. I also has a little blood in my urine too. Mine got better fairly quickly though and now I don't hae any issues with my bladder. Speak to your team about it just in case..when I did they did a urine test in my weekly check in as they were monitoring for infection. X
Hi mollymop, you wee can be affected by treatment and I got radiation cystitis which is obviously radiation caused. I drank like a fish and took cranberry tablets although my oncologist questioned why as she said I had no infection and they can’t cure it. It made me feel better and would we in a sitz bath full of water or used a bidet spray while doing it. It does eventually pass but pretty annoying isn’t it. I put a heat wrap on my tummy and painkillers too. Keep your team informed about this and any other symptoms that may pop up.
Julie
Hello Mollymop
I am so sorry that you are finding it difficult to pee - I have deeply unpleasant memories of a bad case of cystitis but wasn't affected during treatment, fortunately. You are doing all the right things, and flag it up to your team as well just in case you do have a UTI, they can check very quickly. And, be aware, I had a friend who was in agony from what she thought was cystitis after an op, her urine sample was checked and was clear and the pain got worse. It transpired that she did have an infection but was drinking so much water it skewed the test results to show negative. She was quickly put on antibiotics which cleared it up.
Healing hug.

Hi Mollymop,
I had radiation cystitis towards the end of my treatment and GP prescribed antibiotics which did help. Might be worth checking out.

Hi Mollymop24 ,
I'm so sorry you’re feeling so much discomfort right now. I have to agree with others that it sounds like you have radiation cystitis. I suffered with this on & off from the end of my second week of treatment. Unfortunately unlike bacterial cystitis it isn’t treatable with antibiotics & I was told just to drink lots of water which I too found quite difficult, I did get myself some sugar free cranberry juice & made sure I had 3 or 4 glasses a day, I’m not sure if it did any good or not as the cystitis seemed to come & go over a couple of weeks. If you haven’t already done so let your treating team know what’s going on as they may have some ideas on how to ease this, my radiotherapy team were great, the girls on the team had lots of ideas on how to manage side effects.
I hope you find some relief for this soon.
Nicola
thank you for replying. It’s good to know I am not the only one who’s had these symptoms. Just got one of these which I hope will help with water quantity
