Hi,
I'm on week 5 of treatment only 5 sessions of radiotherapy left.
I have been really suffering with the sore, broken and weeping skin all around my vagina.
I was given PolyMem dressing as soon as the skin started to break but it made me incredibly sore and I was in agony with it. On Monday I saw one of the doctors and they gave me Atrauman which is an impregnated wound contact layer. Basically it is a scratchy mesh with a thin layer of ointment on it which dries out within 1-2 hours of application. When I got to my radiotherapy session today I had to literally peel it off the skin which then left it all bleeding and sticking together I couldn't even sit down.
Are there any other suggestions anyone has to relieve this pain? Are dressings the only option?
Thank you in advance.
Hi Lynn - I have used Flamigel every day through treatment and after - also a barrier cream. The patches they gave me were painful and useless. I managed to get slow release morphine - oral morphine and used the sitz bath with a flannel to hold on the skin when so sore x I called the cancer care line daily as just couldn’t cope and questioned everything xxx
Oh my goodness Lynn31 this sounds incredibly painful! My skin held up pretty well during treatment so I didn’t need dressings, I did use boatloads of flaminal cream & QV cream (an aqueous type cream) though. I would probably try airing things as much as possible at home & if the pain relief you’re using at the moment isn’t cutting it please speak with your treating team to see if there’s other options. I really hope you find some relief soon.
Nicola
Hi Lynn
Otherwise, I have cocodamol, but it doesn’t work on this type of pain.
please let me know if you find a solution!

I feel your pain - truly. I had open sores back to front but fortunately, using Polymem foam dressing on top of a liberal application of Flaminal Forte (this is important) worked for me - and renewing every time I went to the loo. I am so sorry you are suffering so badly, I don't have any other suggestions other than to ask for the Flaminal Forte, which doesn't dry out, it is almost waxy. The person who helped me most was the tissue viability nurse. She was marvellous and knew all the right things to use.
Gently healing hug
Irene xx
I'm definitely going to ask about Flaminal Forte today.
I was told the PolyMem works best when it's been on longer, up to 7 days...certainly wasn't doing that. I can't even stand the smell of it now though so I can't use that again.
Thank you Irene xx
