I don’t start my chemo until next week but I’ve been feeling really tired and drained. Is this normal?
Tiffy
I would agree with Gail, it is tremendous shock to be given a cancer diagnosis and that can present in all sorts of ways, exhaustion being one of them along with loss of appetite and awful nights where in spite of the exhaustion, sleep is elusive.
Once treatment starts, you may well still feel exhausted but there is a concrete reason behind it and a feeling of purpose that this treatment is hopefully going to clear you of cancer.
At the same time, I would stress that any symptoms that are really worrying (at any stage during treatment) keep a member of the team treating you informed. The are the experts and normally go out of their way to help.
Will be thinking of you and hoping all goes well next week.

Hi Tiffy ,
Welcome to the MacMillan Online Community although I’m really sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis.
I agree with all that’s been said here already, although you feel as though you’ve been coping well with your diagnosis the stress & anxiety will have all been going on in the background I’m sure. You may feel as though you’re sleeping ok but I’m sure it’s not the restful sleep that you had prior to your diagnosis & this alone will leave you exhausted. Having said all of this it’s worth mentioning to your treating team, it may be the case that they’ll check your bloods prior to starting your treatment.
Wishing you well with the start of your treatment.
Nicola
