Hi there,

How many of you have received ridiculously high quotes for travel insurance and thought, "You know what? I'm going to take a chance without it"?

  • Hi

You ask what could go wrong while you were away-you could have an accident, lose your luggage, have all your money stolen-lots of things which are nothing to do with your cancer, but if you risk going with no insurance at all that could be a costly decision for you.

In my own situation, my insurance company paid out holiday costs when I was first diagnosed and had to cancel. After treatment ended, I went back to them to update my situation and could not get cover for my cancer until I was 6 months out from a clear scan. We wanted to travel when I was 5 months clear, so I was able to exclude any cover for my cancer, but be insured for everything else like accidents or theft etc. I thought it was a balanced risk to do that as they would have fully covered me travelling a month later. As it happens, all was well.

I personally wouldn’t risk travelling with no insurance at all, but I hope you don’t have to cancel your holiday.

    Sarah xx

  • Yes to the high costs, although these were with non-specialist providers. I wouldn’t even bother with those now. No, I would never travel abroad without insurance. I recommend AllClear, who covered me when I was in the middle of investigations (not cancer-related). They did exclude any symptoms related to this though. No other specialists would even offer me insurance at all; as mentioned they dislike ongoing situations!
I have multiple chronic health conditions and I need insurance if going out of the UK. I paid under £50 for a week in Europe this year. It’s worth a try. Very good luck!
