Hello,

I just joined this group, I am supporting my mum who has peritoneal mesothelioma which has metastasised. The chemo did not really work, but a week ago we found out that her cancer can be treated with an antibody treatment. She had the first IV on Friday - I don't even know exactly what she was given. I have tried to find out as much as possible on the internet and read somewhere that it takes a couple of weeks to start working - does anybody have experience with antibody treatment? I would be grateful for any bit of information.

Many thanks

Rena

    Rena,

A more generalized term for antibody treatment is immunotherapy and it is used quite a bit these days after traditional forms of therapy have stopped working. The key to their success is when the cancer has mutations that set it apart from the rest of the body and give the immune system something to focus on. My mother went through immunotherapy after the cancer came back the second time. Unfortunately in her case, it didn't do anything for her and it was stopped after two treatments. I know others where it has worked well and given many years of productive life back to them. It all depends on the type of cancer and what mutations it has.

    Best wishes

    Hi lthenderson,

thank you for your response. Pathology tested the tumour sample and told the oncologist that the type of cancer is one that antibody treatment would work for. I am hoping so badly that it will work. She gets the second treatment on Friday and the oncologist said he'd do a CT scan after the 3rd time. I'm just hoping it won't be too soon to see results.

    All the best to you

    Hi Rena,

Hope you are ok? I too am new and supporting my mum through peritoneal cancer. She had debunking surgery a week ago, where they found some more near her liver and pancreas. It’s heartbreaking isn’t it. She has been offered two more rounds of chemo to finish her 6, then target drug therapy.

I really hope this works for your mum xxx
