Hi I've been through radiotherapy but just heard from a friend who has had day 1 of radiotherapy and is in real pain. She said it hurt during treatment and now it's getting worse and burning. Does anyone have any advice about what to do? I've suggested delaying treatment until they've reviewed the treatment plan.

  • Hi Cancerquestions

I am sorry to hear that your friend has pain after her first radiotherapy session.

Radiotherapy can cause different side effects in the area where treatment is given.

The best thing for your friend to do is to speak to her radiotherapists in the morning about the symptoms she is having. They will have all her medical details, details of her radiotherapy treatment plan and will be able to offer specific advice.

The side effects that she is having may be ones that could be expected and there may be something that can help eg; creams, medications.

It is hard to advise on here without knowing which area is affected. My own radiotherapy was pelvic and my symptoms were mainly tummy related. Radiotherapy to a different area would cause other possible symptoms.

As she has worsening pain and the burning sensation it may be an idea for her to give NHS111 a call tonight for assessing.
