Travel insurance pre surgery

Hi,

I have tried to have a look through the specific travel insurance forum but finding it hard to find the answer. I have a 4 night trip to Portugal booked on 30th May but I have surgery (wide local excision) on 16th May - my doctor and the support nurse confirmed I will be ok to travel. The issue I’m having is getting insurance right now as I am awaiting the surgery pre trip. I spoke to insurewith but they were unable to provide cover at the moment. I tried the comparison site for medical cover and one company came up but it is £270. Has anyone had any success or would it be ok to wait until after surgery so I can declare I am not awaiting treatment?

Any advice welcome, thanks x

  • Hi

Unfortunately, it can be more difficult to find reasonably priced travel insurance when a cancer diagnosis is involved so please join us over in the travel insurance group to see the recommendations from others who have been successful.

Once you've joined, have a look through the threads there called 'Recommended Travel Insurance' and Recommended travel insurance 2023-24', both of which you'll find on the first page. They are full of recommendations from other cancer patients who have got travel insurance.

It's impossible to say if the premium would be cheaper if you waited until after your operation. I've certainly found that the further away I get from my diagnosis the cheaper insurance has got but I'm talking years and I think you're only talking days. Also, all the time you don't have insurance you're not covered if you have to cancel.

I have used payingtoomuch.com and goodtogoinsurance.com in the past but I had already had my surgery so don't know if they cover people waiting for surgery.

I hope you're able to get insurance so that you can continue with your holiday plans.
