My wife was diagnosed with Stage4b womb cancer 4 weeks ago

The days since have been a mix of up and down emotions

We have given a lot of information which seems very generalised and have 2 weeks before a consultation to discuss treatment plans

I know its early days and this isnt about me but I need to get things under control in my mind

I feel guilty having these emotions because my wife is calm and accepting of her condition

I need to get control

  • Hi Hubanddad

    Welcome to the Online Community.

I am sorry to hear of your wife's diagnosis of womb cancer 4 weeks ago. I understand that it is a worrying time and it is normal to experience a lot of different emotions.

I had the same cancer as your wife in 2022 and my treatment was surgery, chemo and radiotherapy.

I found the time between diagnosis and waiting to see the consultant was pretty challenging. Like you I was given some general information but what I really needed was to know specifically what would happen to me and when. Once i did see my consultant and had my treatment plan, things felt a bit more settled and under control.

For most ladies where it is medically possible a hysterectomy is the first line in treatment and the aim is normally to remove the cancer. Where diagnosis is at a later stage the aim is normally to remove as much cancer as possible. With a more advanced cancer or where there is a higher grade cancer, then there is normally some form of follow up treatment offered. This could be chemo or radiotherapy or sometimes both.

Some ladies who have a more advanced cancer can sometimes be offered other treatments. Immunotherapy is one type. Another possibility is hormone treatment.

This is only to give a general idea and your wife's treatment plan will depend on several different factors and they will go through all the options at her consultant's appointment. It may be an idea to talk with her and put together a list of questions that you may have. I personally found this helpful.

I had my first appointment with a consultant on a Friday and was straight away seen as a pre op appointment. The surgery happened on the following Monday. So although this time is a difficult time for you both- in my experience once you actually see the consultant, things can pick up pace.

My surgery was done via keyhole and I was in hospital for 1 night and then home the following day. There was little pain and I recovered quickly. If your wife has surgery then the post op results are looked at to decide on what, if any further treatment is needed.

Occasionally ladies can be offered different treatment or treatment in a different order.

We do have these groups that may also be of help to you both.

Please do not feel guilty for feeling as you do- having a diagnosis of cancer in a loved one is a really tough time. I know that I personally was probably calmer than my family and friends. When your wife sees the consultant many of your questions will be answered and she should also be given a Cancer Nurse Specialist who will also offer support. Mine was brilliant and a first port of call with any worries.

We also have the Macmillan Support Line available from 8am-8pm everyday if it would help to talk things through with someone.

I hope that the appointment with the consultant goes well and brings some clarification about what may happen next. I am normally around the Womb group so will look out for you there. in the meantime if there is anything you need, please do ask.

    Jane
