Hi,
I was recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer, and I’m really struggling to adjust to everything that has happened.
It all started with a lump on my neck, which I had removed along with part of my thyroid in March. In June 2026, I was told that the lump was cancerous, and I then had the rest of my thyroid removed in July 2026. That’s when I started taking thyroid medication.
I’m finding the adjustment to the medication really difficult. Before all of this, my blood tests were always fine and I didn’t have any symptoms relating to my thyroid. I originally only knew something was wrong because of the lump and low iron.
Now I’m dealing with the tiredness, hair loss and all the changes that come with having no thyroid, and I honestly don’t know how I’m supposed to feel or what I should be doing to manage it all. It’s been a lot to take in, and I’m finding it quite overwhelming trying to adjust physically and emotionally to everything that has happened so quickly.
I think I’m just struggling to find my way through it all at the moment.

I know from experience having been on my cancer journey for over 26 years (first diagnosed in 1999 at 43) with two very rare, hard to treat types of Non Hodgkin’s Lymphomas (one incurable) then Asbestosis and recently Prostate Cancer that navigating this journey can be such a stressful and challenging time but talking with and getting support from people who have walked or are walking the ‘exact same' journey can help a lot.
The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) so can I recommend that you look to join and put up your own post in our dedicated…….
…….. support group.
This group is a safe place to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support.

As always the Macmillan Support Line is open between 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00…… this service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits and financial guidance or just a listening ear.
Talking to people ‘face to face’ can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.

Hi again Stepy, although my 26 years have had a few bumps in the road…. I am 10 years 10 months out from my last treatment for stage 4 Lymphoma, I turned 70 last Nov and I am living as good a life as any healthy 70 year old can be living…. back in 1999 I was told that the median survival was 3-5 years……. well I have kept well ahead of that alarm bell…… a testament to how treatment have developed over the years.
