New and at sea in caring

My mum was diagnosed with stage four terminal lung cancer around 10 days ago. I now feel I’m drowning in carers and nappies and hospital beds and medicines and I feel so scared that she will be in pain towards the end and I feel panic stricken at the thought of having to live without her. My husband’s wonderfully supportive and sharing the load but I can’t stop looking ahead to everything will need to do and then feel overwhelmed. Everyone says take it one day at a time which I try and do but it’s hard as my mind is still whirling

  • Hi   and a very warm welcome to the Macmillan Community but I am so sorry to hear about your mum and the challenges you are dealing with.

This is such stressful and challenging time but talking with and getting support from people who have walked or are walking the ‘exact same' journey can help a lot.

As you see the Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) and when it comes to the practical and emotional challenges of supporting your mum and indeed yourself you may benefit from posting in our general cancer……

I see you have replied to a post in our Carers only support group….. can I recommend that you put up your own post using the text from this post as you will get better support.

You may also want join and post in our Supporting someone with incurable cancer support group where you will connect with a wide range of members navigating the exact same support challenges.

As always the Macmillan Support Line is open between 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00…… this service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits and financial guidance or just a listening ear.

Talking to people ‘face to face’ can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.

Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community.
