Hysterectomy severe abnormal smear

Hey! New here, just looking for some advice!

I’m 37 years old, After having a smear test that had come back with severe abnormal changes and Hpv, I was referred for a colposcopy. The nurse was unable to take a biopsy as I didn’t have enough cervix left after multiple lletz surgeries and severe scarring in the cervix. The consultant has advised a full hysterectomy but leaving the ovaries, I had a MRI which hasn’t flagged up any immediate concerns however consultant can not rule out cancerous cells from the scan. I asked how immediate the hysterectomy needed to be and the consultant agreed we can wait until after family holiday (2months time), which is abit more reassuring. I feel like I have so many questions and what ifs but don’t know who to ask I don’t want to keep bothering the consultant. Most of the posts I’ve seen have had a cancer diagnosis of some kind before the hysterectomy, any one else in a similar position?

  • Hi  and welcome to MacMillan.

I’d like to recommend that you join and make your post in the cervical cancer group, as that’s the best place to speak to others in a similar situation. The link to join the group is here

I was in a different situation myself as I had a confirmed cancer diagnosis, but I’m not suggesting this would be the same in your situation. Others in the group I know have had hysterectomies for persistent abnormal cells, so posting in the cervical group will allow you to ask some questions there and others will be able to share their experiences.

I’ll look out for you joining the group, and you’ll be very welcome to be part of it.
