Hi, I'm new here. My dad got diagnosed yesterday with stage 4 prostate cancer and I'm really struggling with this. He'll get a scan in next few weeks to see if it's spread anywhere else in his body before the doctors going to tell what the plan is for the next move. My parents live in the Netherlands and I'm in Scotland, this makes it so hard for me cause I can't come over as easy as I'd like. For some reasons my mind think of the worse but also know these days the doctors can do a lot.

  • Hello ,

A warm welcome to the Macmillan online community, although I'm very sorry you have the need to join.

I'm sorry to hear your dad has been diagnosed with prostate cancer but don't despair just yet. Prostate cancer, unlike many others, is a very treatable and the outlook is not as bleak as you believe. Modern treatments can work for many years with a good quality of life and I'm sure your dad will be around for a long time yet.

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014 and had radiotherapy plus hormone treatment. Fast forward to 2024 and it was found to have recurred and spread outside the prostate. I had further treatment then, am now incurable but treatable and expect to be around for years yet. I spend about half the year travelling abroad with my wife and we have a great time.

We have a specific group for prostate cancer on here with many members, both men and ladies, who are bursting with information and advice based on their own experiences and treatment. Please repost your comment on there and you'll recieve pleny of positive replies and advice.

I've placed a link below for you.

All the best for now - Derek.
