Hysterectomy or not?

Hi, I’m new here

Just wondering, has anyone had an elective (keyhole) hysterectomy and oopherectomy after hormonal breast cancer for preventative reasons? I do not have the BRCA gene but my mum and all my aunts had breast cancer too. I also have (mild) endometriosis. Just wondering what to do.

There seem to be a lot of people still in pain and with UTI/bladder complications months later, which worries me. My surgeon said it’s my decision. Would welcome your pros and cons thanks.

Ps… HRT will not be an option for me.

  • Hi Corkicat

Welcome to the Online Community. I am sorry to hear that your Mum and Aunts have all been through breast cancer and yourself also. I understand why you are considering a hysterectomy and ovary removal.

I had a hysterectomy in 2022 as part of my treatment for endometrial cancer.

I was in hospital for 1 night, had little pain and recovered quickly. I found the surgery much more straightforward than I had expected. Recovery went well, was up and about after a few hours and then continued to be able to do most things at home. I had to be careful lifting for a while. If I had not needed to go on to have further treatment I feel I would have been fully recovered by around 6 weeks.

I did not need any pain relief after getting home and had no issues with UTI/bladder. Any after effects that remain from my cancer are to do with the chemo and radiotherapy- I have none from the surgery.

I am normally on the Womb cancer forum and it maybe worth having a look/posting your question on there. For the majority of ladies a hysterectomy is the first line treatment for womb cancer so they will have been through the surgery.
