Hello

i I was told yesterday that I have a FIT result of >400ug/g. I have been referred to hospital on a 2-week pathway.

I presented at the GP on Monday as I had been suffering from diarrhoea since Wednesday of last week. Initially thought a virus. But as it hasn’t improved, I wanted it checked out.

it was the last straw. For a few months, I had some mild and gradual changes in my bowel habits. I used to be a ‘regular 6am’ toilet trip every day with healthy looking stools. But it changed to every few days, random, no regularity and having to urge to go but cannot relieve the sensation and very bloaty and gas was felt but difficult to pass.

i did a York Test at home thinking it if had developed some sensitivities and it came back as ‘high’ for banana, lemon, lime, gluten, wheat, cows milk and yeast. I was sceptical. Tried to remove lactose but there was no change. TBH, I didn’t think it was reliable.

my history of bowel issues has been since 2006. I was admitted to hospital August 2006 with severe non-specific colitis. Huge amounts of bleeding. X rays every day and treatment for ulcerative colitis and crohns before a colonoscopy six days later - I think it was too inflamed to do it. I signed a paper to say they would remove my entire colon if they deemed it necessary. I kept the colon! They found an ulcer and I am sure polyps. I had follow up tests but no treatment. My bowels settled after 18 months.

Since then, all has been fine. 2020 I discovered I had an increasing sensitivity to duck egg. I removed it from my diet. I had 12 hours of severe stomach pains and diarrhoea. Then in 2022, I collapsed at work with severe stomach ache. I went to the GP at home and ‘failed’ a rebound test quite significantly. They suspected appendicitis. 2 days in hospitals and a CT scan and found nothing - slightly enlarged lymph nodes and some stuff not related to bowels. Then in 2023, I ended up with Egypt tummy. I wasn’t ill, but two weeks of severe diarrhoea - even fluids came out. Stool sample negative for four bugs they tested for. Bowels fine until mid-late 2025 when I notice a slight and gradual change in frequency, urge, stool shape etc to now.

I am on day 13 now of severe diarrhoea with stomach cramps now and again presenting left side, top left side and top right side and back, urge to go constantly but most of the time there is nothing.

I want to know how long people had to wait from the GP referral (mine was yesterday - Thursday 5th March) to their test (assuming colonoscopy). The referral says I should be contacted by 9th March but not sure if they work weekends! I am near York if that helps.

I am aware that it doesn’t necessarily mean cancer but I won’t lie, it’s on my mind. Certainly reading about symptoms of others has opened my eyes as I have symptoms that would never have linked to possible cancer. The most obvious that is not directly linked to the bowel is fatigue. I put it down to my age (just turned 47) and no symptoms of perimenopause yet (regular as clockwork) but still I am exhausted each day (am a teacher) and it was ‘noticeable’ more in October when I struggled to walk the fells of the Lakes. Usually I can walk and hike 10-12 miles a day with no exhaustion but I had to halt half way up some fells with my legs feeling like lead. I am asthmatic but my chest was fine.

  • Hi   and a very warm welcome to the Macmillan Community but sorry to hear about your ongoing diagnosis challenges.

I know from experience having been on my cancer journey for over 25 years with two very rare, hard to treat types of Non Hodgkin’s Lymphomas (one incurable) that navigating this journey can be such a stressful and challenging time but talking with and getting support from people who have walked or are walking the ‘exact same' journey can help a lot.

The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) so can I recommend that you look to join and put up your own post in our dedicated……..

       Bowel (colon and rectum) cancer

…….. support area. This group is a safe place to talk to others with a similar diagnosis experience, to ask questions and get support.

To connect in with the group please click on the link above……. then once the group page opens you will see a [Black - Click to Join - Banner] at the bottom of the page, click in this box and this will then confirm that you have joined the group.

You can then introduce yourself to the group by putting up your very own post by clicking [+ Create new post] or [+] in the top right of the group page.

You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.

The Macmillan Support Line is open between 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00…… this service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support or just a listening ear.

Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community.
