Hello, I'm new here. I was diagnosed Aug 2015 with colon cancer.  I have very good reasons for wishing to have my treatment carried out in another health board area in Scotland. Would anyone know the best way to go about this request please?

Many thanks for any help or advice offered.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community, and although I've had different cancer diagnoses to you I know how important it is to feel that you're being treated where you want to.

The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the bowel cancer group as you'll then connect directly with others who have the same type of cancer as you. Hopefully you'll find someone there who has changed hospitals.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and any treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi….. I am in Inverness, I have no experience in doing this but have had treatment in n different heath boards but this was arranged by my hospital team.
My understanding is a request for treatment in another NHS Scotland board area should be discussed with your your GP….. but this should be done at the referral stage.

While patients do not have an automatic right to choose, the Charter of Patient Rights and Responsibilities allows for preferences based on clinical need, and you can ask for a transfer if waiting times are exceeded.

You may want to talk this through with your GP.
