Breast Cancer & LCWRA

I am currently off work due to treatment for breast cancer, including mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. I have filled in the UC50 form which was also completed by my Dr advising I was not currently well enough to work. I have had a message today advising I need to have a Work Capability Assessment. My understanding was that as I was having treatment I would automatically qualify for LCWRA. Has anyone else had this? What should I expect at the interview? I am really worried they may tell me I have to go back to work.  Thanks

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community, and although I had the same treatment as you for breast cancer, I was already retired so don't know anything about claiming benefits.

The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the breast cancer group as you'll then connect directly with others who have the same type of cancer as you. You could then find out how others have got on when claiming.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

Macmillan has a lot of information around claiming benefits including this section on universal credit. You could also speak to one of the Macmillan money advisers by phoning 0808 808 0000 between 8am and 6pm. If you decide to phone them then have a read through this information first to make sure you have all the information they will need.

    Wishing you all the best
