Hi Everyone so been lurking for couple of weeks just reading your posts - there are some amazing people and stories on these boards
So I'm just starting my journey after being invited for regular lung screening (last time was two years ago and all clear) I was referred for a PET Scan on 10 November which highlighted an 8 mm nodule in upper right lung that is around 10cm deep into the lung and apparently very hard to biopsy due to its position
ITs been discussed that it is very likely cancer in the lung my consultant will be talking about me in his MDT meeting tomorrow and we will have a conversation on Wednesday about a potential way forward.
Seems so far I'm not suitable for standard biopsy due to its position but wonder have any of you been in this position and how did you move forward - the consultants mentioned VATS and RAB procedures
He said that if its not possible to biopsy then will treat as cancer rather than continue to monitor and re-scan regularly. Is this quite normal ?
As an aside the PET scan also found a suspicious hot spot in left thyroid that i have a separate ENT appointment for tomorrow but am suspicious that it is related.
is it often that someone will have two different types of cancer at once - am i just overthinking this? So far I'm very upbeat and positive about the whole thing - that may change once a definitive diagnosis is given who knows lol -
I had lung function tests last week that were apparently good according to the consultant this morning -I am (was) a smoker for 30+ years - quit 2 weeks ago
fev1 of 3 (114%) fvc of 4.4l (127%) and tlco of 72% predicted
so just the TLCO on the low side ( I think 80-120 is more the norm)
Suppose I'm just looking for any reassurance out there or anyone with a similar story
Thanks for reading
Much love
J

Hi J,
I’m very new on my cancer journey and this is my first response to someone!
But I do have similar experiences to date.
Firstly my PET scan also had an incidental hot spot in my throat and I, too, had an ENT referral. They were very thorough and found nothing. I was told it’s not unusual for this to happen.
I was also identified via the screening (my first one). My PET confirmed a likely malignancy in each lung and they are being treated as 2 separate primaries. The one in my right lung is in the middle lobe and also too deep for an ordinary biopsy. At the moment the plan is for probably doing a lobectomy and biopsy at the same time. This will probably be in February.
First I am having SABR Radiotherapy on the left lung, starting next Monday.
Big congrats on stopping smoking!. I gradually cut down and had my first cigarette-free on Saturday. I have been helped by a bit of vaping (not ideal, but a start).
Best wishes
