Hi all. I have just joined the forum so this is all new to me. I am 65 years of age and I was diagnosed with breast cancer last November, had it removed in December. Unfortunately I also had 7 out of 12 removed lymph nodes under my arm that were cancerous, which makes me high risk of recurrence. I’ve had 6 months of chemo, 3 weeks of daily radiotherapy and am now on Letrazole for 10 years. I am being offered 2 additional medications. One is called zoledronic acid which helps stop the osteoporosis that can come from the letrazole and a small chance of stopping spread to the bones. The other is a relatively new medication called Abemaciclib which is supposed to be significant in stopping recurrence. Both have horrendous side effects. Im struggling to make a decision on whether to take them. I am generally a fit and healthy 65 year old, I exercise and have a healthy diet. My cancer was HR positive and her2negative which I believe is the most common type. Has anyone on here been offered these drugs and if so what is your experience?
Good luck and sending best wishes to you all
Hi Di65a3a97f and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community, and I had zoledronic acid (Zometa) for 3 years after my lumpectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Everyone is different, but I had no side effects at all during the three years I was taking it.
The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the breast cancer group as you'll then connect directly with others who have the same type of cancer as you.
To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
It would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
Hi latchbrook, thank you so much for responding and your advice. I’ll try and join the breast cancer group and update my profile shortly. So glad you had no symptoms on the Zoledronic acid. Thank you and good luck for the future.
