Hi

My partner was diagnosed with prostate cancer in early 2023. He underwent radiotherapy in July 2023 and then went on to a course of adjuvent hormone therapy. Early 2024 we noticed the beginnings of memory changes and after consultation with his oncologist the family concluded that the AHT may be contributing to the memory changes so he stopped taking them in June 2024. He is  having PSA tests three-monthly and only takes tamsulosin and calcium tablets. His PSA is undetectable and his testosterone is slowly rising so the cancer seems to be under control.

Sadly the memory issues have now developed into full blown dementia and my loving, lively, happy partner who sailed through radiotherapy is now a shadow of his former self. The family is devastated and wish we had known more about these side-effects at the outset.

Is the onset of dementia prevalent amongst prostate cancer sufferers?

  • Hello

A warm welcome to the Macmillan Online Community. I am Brian one of the Community Champions here at Macmillan.

The Community is divided into Cancer specific groups or chat rooms and I would advise you to join us on the Prostate Community where you will connect with others in the same or similar circumstances. Here's the link you need:

    Prostate cancer forum

When you click the link and the page opens up, click on "join" on the black banner at the bottom of the page. Once you have joined us you can introduce yourself in the "New Here - Say Hello" section of the group - you can either copy and paste or repost your original post. It will then be seen by all the group members.

The Prostate group is a great group, i should know as I hang about there being in my 4th year of my personal Prostate Cancer journey.

I look forward to "meeting" you again in our part of the Community.

    Best wishes - Brian.
