Bowel cancer with liver mets.

Hi I am 56 years old and have just been diagnosed with bowel cancer.  I did my first fit test and then had to have a colonoscopy which confirmed I had bowel cancer.  I have no symptoms.  I then had a CT scan which showed cancer had spread to my liver.  Had a PET scan and then MRI.  I have seen an oncologist and she wants me to have chemotherapy Folfoxiri or Folfirinox.  It is a combination of 3 drugs.  They want to put a PICC line in and administer two drugs over half a day and send me home with a pump which will continue to pump third drug in over 48 hours.  I will have this every 2 weeks for 3 months. It sounds horrendous.  Has anyone else had this treatment?  How did it go and any hints and tips you can give me?  Does anyone make it out the other side?

I have been told that this is the best treatment for me following MDT meeting and I am terrified.  I don't seem to have any choice over my treatment is this normal?

Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

Thank you

  • Hi

Im sorry about your diagnosis. I had a different cancer to you ( anal) but i did have chemo via a picc line and pump, i had one drug put in via the picc at hospital and then the pump was  attached on a Monday changed on Wednesday and removed Friday this happened in week one of my treatment and then repeated week five. It was ok the only things that bothered me were the fact the picc was put in 2 weeks prior to starting treatment which limited the exercise I was allowed to do and mentally I didn't like the thought of the drugs going in and seeing the pump attached was a constant reminder. I have put a link below for the bowel cancer section of these forums, if you post there you will hopefully get a better response than mine, one more specific to your cancer. Sending hugs. Xx

  • Hi Bungle1

Thank you for your kind words.  I am due to start in 3 weeks and still undecided about whether I can handle it.  Like you, I like to go to the gym it helps with my mental health and I want to keep my physical health.

I am so new to this site that I am just trying to navigate it. Thank you for the link.

Good luck with your treatment.  How many cycles will you have to have?

Thinking of you and hope you keep posting your journey.

    Sending virtual hugs back x

  • Hi

If you click on the link Bungle has provided, you will get straight to the bowel cancer group and be able to put your post up in there. It is a busy and helpful group and you’ll be able to connect with others who have different forms of bowel cancer and will have been through or are going through exactly the same chemotherapy as is proposed for you.

Many members of that group have experience of spread to the liver, and they will be able to share their experiences of this chemo. The group also has lots of advice on coping with treatment and side effects. Joining the group will mean that more people will see your post and be able to help support you through this.

    Sarah xx
