My mother is in her mid eighties, and had a UTUC diagnosis - with her ureter and kidney removed at the end of May. The biopsy showed high grade and invasive cancer. The surgeon said he removed the cancer with clearance, but suggested we see an oncologist. The usual post surgery treatment is chemotherapy. My mother is in extremely good health (other than the cancer), and is already virtually back to her old self (apart from the mental health aspects) following her surgery.
Does anyone have any good advice on what to ask the oncologist, and what to consider about the next treatment steps?
Hi Jane724436a5
Glad your mum is doing well. Someone else asked s similar question on another post and someone gave them this link
It maybe useful for you. X

Hi Jane......
I would take the surgeon's advice. I had a PET/CT to make sure my cancer was gone so that's one thing I would be asking.
If a scan isn't suggested what would the rationale be for mopping up chemotherapy? Scan's cannot show very small cancers so chemotherapy might be suggested.
Macmillan has some useful info HERE and you might find some more suggestions joining the Kidney Cancer Forum

thanks, she had a CT scan last week of her kidney area and thorax, but I don't think we will have the results of that before we see the oncologist on this coming Monday.
Don’t forget you can formulate more than one plan depending on future investigation. If your mum’s surgeon has suggested more investigation by an oncologist there must be a reason.

I think he suggested seeing the oncologist due to the grade and severity of the cancer, that although he thinks that he got everything it may have already spread.
Hopefully the oncologist can explain further.
Thanks for the advice about more than one plan, that's something we need to bear in mind.
Good luck Jane. Give your mum a big forum hug from me. Xx
