Trying to find my new "Norm" following treatment for rectal cancer

Hi

As someone heading for his 75th birthday, and who has suffered from a number of medical conditions for over 20 years, (I already receive PIP for care and mobility), the recent diagnosis of rectal cancer threw me a fair bit. Following 3 successful Papillon treatments at Guildford, and 5 short Radiotherapy sessions at the Kent Oncology centre, I am trying to come to terms or better understand the side effects that I seem to be expweriencingh. The MacMillan team is pleased with my progress so far, but being up all night responding to my body's instructions to visit the bathroom, is taking a bit of getting used to, as does genuine visits to the loo from about 5:30am until about 10 in the morning. I get the feeling that these events need to be embraced as part of my daily routines and I need to adjust my lifestyle accordingly. I'm not getting the feeling that such things will disappear

Does anyone share a similar experieince here? I would appreciate any helpful hints (or even crystal ball predictions at this point)

Many thanks

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community, and although I've had different cancer diagnoses to you I know how having a diagnosis can disrupt your life.

The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the bowel cancer group as you'll then connect directly with others who have the same type of cancer as you.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
