Very anxious about hysteroscopy and biopsy results

Hi,

I had a hysteroscopy last Thursday due to a one off episode of PMB spotting and was told by Consultant that all looked healthy but that a polyp had been removed.  I received a phone call yesterday to say I have to attend an appointment tomorrow to discuss biopsy results.  I am absolutely terrified and struggling with anxiety as to why I have been called in so quickly.  Can anyone help me understand why they would want to see me so quickly.

Thank you x

  • Hi Barb

Am sorry to hear that you had an episode of PMB and that this meant a hysteroscopy/biopsy.

During my own journey with womb cancer, I have had different results at different times and it was always down to how busy the pathology lab was. My initial biopsy results were back within a week.

With being called in, I can understand why you are feeling scared. However it may well be that your consultant is one that prefers to do follow ups face to face. My diagnosis was given by phone call as previously arranged. It is natural to fear the worst at times like these but it may well be that there is something that may need to be monitored or needs some treatment that may not actually be cancerous. Some ladies for example can need hormonal treatment for a thickened endometrium.

The online community is divided into different forums and I will pop a link here to the Womb group.

Here there will be other ladies who have undergone the same testing, have felt the anxiety of waiting for results and will want to offer you support. Some ladies do get the all clear and some unfortunately do get a diagnosis of endometrial cancer. However one thing to bear in mind, if the news is not what you were hoping for- then endometrial cancer, where caught early is normally a very treatable cancer.

  • Hi again Barb

I have seen that you have posted in the Ask a Nurse section and they normally respond within 3 working days. It is fine to post there.

However it is quickest to give the Support Line a call and talk to one of the nurses. Rather that be waiting and worrying perhaps give the a call.

  • Thank you Jane for getting back to me so quickly.  I take note of what you say and it has helped me to see another point of view.

  • I remember what a worrying time it was waiting after a biopsy. I was incredibly anxious that I was waiting too long for an outpatient follow-up appointment. It's usual that each hospital does things differently so there isn't necessarily any consistency with the time between appointments. I found the Helpline a lifesaver when my anxiety was in overdrive. Sending best wishes.
