hi i have had lung cancer 3 times and esofigal cancer , i get pip and am already retired , but it looks like my lung cancer is back , my question is will i still get pip after the changes?

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I don't know how having a lung cancer recurrence will affect your PIP so I'm going to recommend that you join the lung cancer group as you'll then connect directly with others who have the same type of cancer as you and who may also be receiving PIP.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment to date into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi  and welcome to the community.

I am in receipt of PIP myself but I wasn’t sure what you meant when you asked whether it might be affected by the changes?

Do you mean changes to pip when you have a new or additional diagnosis, or the changes to pip which the government is currently considering?

If you have a new diagnosis, you may want to complete a change of circumstances form for the DWP, but if you already receive the enhanced amounts of both daily living and mobility your amounts would not change. If you receive the standard rather than enhanced amounts, a change of circumstances could mean a change of award.

No decisions have been made by the government yet on how pip may be changed. It  wants to raise the level of points to 4 or more in any category for the daily living component of pip to be awarded but this needs to be voted on, and they want to start from November 2026, so it’s some time away for us all.

When pip is awarded there is a review date given, so it depends on when your review will be to see how things will stand for you. Your pip will not be stopped before that date, nor will it stop while the review is carried out. For example my award was granted in July 2022 with an award of 3 years, and has currently just been reviewed.

I hope this helps a little.

  • My awards supposed to be for life and  i have it in writing on headed paper but worried about loosing it as i am alread retired and am not allowed to reclaim it

  • I phoned and updated them last week but it seems that i may have lung /liver cancer now as i got a phone call yesterday and they need an mri scan as well

  • Ah, I see what you mean-you cannot make a first claim for pip if you are past pension age-it would be attendance allowance instead- but as you have pip already awarded you’ll be ok to continue receiving it.

As you have a lifetime award, I don’t see how this can be taken away as you will never need to go through a review. I’d try not to worry about this in your position-it will be a long time before changes to pip are implemented and only then if is passed by parliament.

  • Thanks for your prompt reply, i hope they dont go back on there word but you never know, and i hope the you are ok aswell

  • Thanks Paul-I know we can all worry about possible changes to rules and benefits, but the government especially wants to focus on new pip claimants by checking that the criteria to claim are tightened up.

They cannot simply remove a lifetime pip award from you, and you have so much else going on in your life right now, please try not to spend time worrying about this.
