Hi All, I have just joined this forum because I had SCC removed with clear margins in January. I am finding myself getting anxious about every little blemish I see and worrying that it is SCC again. Is this normal. I couldn’t believe I even got this but I suppose not using sun tan lotion in the 60’s & 70’s has come back to bite me. At least I will be using 50 factor sun cream when we go to Florida soon. Thanks for listening.
Hi Dilbean and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I don't have any experience with SCC but I have in the past be diagnosed with BCC and melanoma and can assure you that worrying about every little blemish you find is perfectly normal. However, with time this worrying will lessen especially as hopefully you've been shown how to check your skin and how to protect it in the sun.
The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the skin cancer group as you'll then connect directly with others who have had the same type of cancer as you.
To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
You mention that your skin cancer was possibly caused by not applying sun screen when you were younger but it's important to keep your skin covered and only use sun screen on areas which you can't cover, ie your face, back of hands, etc. If you weren't given a sun safety sheet when diagnosed I can provide you with information on how to keep safe in the sun.
It would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and proposed treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
I hope you have a lovely time in Florida, but remember to keep safe in the sun
