Skin cancer BCC

Hello everyone, I’m new to this forum. In 2018 a large lesion appeared on my calf I saw a dermatologist who diagnosed a benign Lesion called junctions naevus, and told me not to worry about it, he performed a punch biopsy to diagnose but did not remove the whole lesion. To be honest I learned to live with it and ignored it. Fast forward to a few months ago and I noticed it was becoming increasingly itchy so I mentioned it to my GP during an appointment for another matter and she appeared really concerned and said she would “ red flag” a referral to dermatology. I have had some images taken with a dermascope yesterday and got a phone call this morning to say it appears to be a Basel cell carcinoma and I’m booked for a biopsy to confirm and removal on 13th June. The total area is 37mm x 26mm. The dermatologist hasn’t actually seen me in person yet and I’m worried that she maybe won’t be able to remove it at that appointment because my GP was shocked at the size. I’m also terrified that this has been there since 2018 and has possibly spread. I would be grateful if anyone has been through something similar and has any advice. Thanks

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and I've had a couple of BCCs removed over the years.

The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join us over in the skin cancer group, which is a great place to ask questions, share experiences and get support.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

I know you'll still worry about your BCC but, ss you'll see from this information from the British Association of Dermatologists, BCCs rarely spread to other parts of the body and are almost never a danger to life.

Hi  Do please join the skin cancer group at Latchbrook's suggestion but I would like to add that I had a not much smaller lesion on my thigh for 10 years before like yours it started itching. I had been variously diagnosed as a keratoma and a dermatofibroma before a GP I hadn't seen before suspected BCC. The dermatologist didn't think kit was but excised it anyway. It was a BCC. They don't metastasise commonly. I am fit and well three years after its removal

  • Dani, Thank you so much for your reply. This all came as a shock as I really didn’t think the lesion was anything to worry about. I’ve been very anxious and resorted to Dr Google before I found this forum which has been much more helpful
