Candida infection & intense burning in chest caused by breast cancer chemo (EC) - only option suggested to scale back chemo?

Hello,

I'm hoping someone may be able to help me?! (Or perhaps have had a similar situation...although Ive been told its unusualConfused).

I'm currently undergoing chemo (EC-T) for breast cancer (following a masectomy for local spread of BC with 1 lymph node involved) and have encountered a real issue with oral thrush/candida (& potentially oesophageal candida too - as the burning in my chest has been horrendous - this has been the main area of concern).

Due to the fungal/thrush/Candida infection that the chemo causes, Ive been too unwell to proceed with chemo (so dose and duration of chemo cycles have already been reduced) & its taken weeks of flucanazole treatment (at increasingly high doses) to try and get back to a point where I am well enough to proceed with chemo.

I just wondered has anyone ever encountered a similar issue please?

At present the main suggestions from my treatment team are to reduce the chemo again (number of cycles and dose). I just wondered if anyone has been able to navigate this more successfully - so that you can proceed with chemo without the risk of a severe fungal infection escalating?

(Unfortunately they haven't been able to determine much about the type of candida infection I've had to date as I was prescribed fluconazole before any oral swabs were taken, so the swabs, after taking fluconazole, just come back with no result).

Thank you x

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
