Newly Diagnosed - Bowel Cancer

Hello,

I’ve came here because I’ve been recently diagnosed with bowel cancer. I have a lump on my left side which I will hopefully be starting chemo for to reduce the size with a view to removing it and hopefully beating this thing.

I also had a blockage in my bowel for which I had an op to put in two stents.

I'm back home and have been for almost 2 weeks but I'm struggling. I feel very weak, I have been just lying around bed most of the time, I’ve tried getting up but it’s hard. I also have very little appetite and am losing weight.

Wondered if anyone had any similar experience and how long it took to get back on your feet?

  • Hi   and a very warm welcome to the Macmillan Community but sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

Navigating a cancer journey can be such a stressful and challenging time but getting support from people who have walked or are walking the ‘exact same' journey can help a lot. (I have a completely different cancer).

The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) so can I recommend that you look to join and put up your own post in our dedicated Bowel Cancer Support Group.

This group is a safe place to talk to others with a similar diagnosis, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support. To connect in with the group please click on the link below…….

    Bowel (colon and rectum) cancer

……. and once the group page opens you will see a [Black - Click to Join - Banner] at the bottom of the page, click in this box and this will then confirm that you have joined the group.

You can then introduce yourself to the group by putting up your very own post by clicking [+ Create new post] or [+] in the top right of the group page.

You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.

The Macmillan Support Line is open between 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00…… this service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial/work guidance or just a listening ear.

Talking to people ‘face to face’ can be very helpful so do check to see if you have any Local Macmillan Support in your area, do also check for a local Maggie's Centre as these folks are amazing.

Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community.

  • Patience grows as the endurance test challenges us. Keep your communication going with your team, and hopefully in another week you feel you have a handle . Because we can't see inside , it's hard tBouquetimagine all the stuff going on to recover . Good Luck, it feels like we are in an epidemic. Four friends have had this surgery in the past year. Only I am in chemo , but they all had different struggles Bouquet

  •  Hi,

I was diagnosed in August 24  i had a stent fitted Sept 24 it took me a while to recover i had a lot of pressure and discomfort  for 2-4 weeks mine may have been slower due to me starting chemo a week after i developed a fear of food as i was terrified of getting a blockage when they carried out my colonoscopy i only had a 10mm gap in my colon which would explain the pain i had been experiencing.

My husband was very good and we found some low residue food that i would make myself eat  and the nutrients really helped with my energy levels.

i completed my 12 rounds of 5fu and my cancer has shrank  and i am awaiting a answer about surgery so there is certainly hope as hard as it may be to see it right now.

try and get up and do a little as much as you can as this will help you physically feel better and mentally
