Referred for a tongue biopsy

Hello you lovely people,

I'm a 52 year old single dad of young twins.

Yesterday, my dentist said he was referring me for a biopsy of the apparent ulcer on my tongue.

I find myself almost frozen with fear, as if I've actually received a diagnosis of mouth cancer.

Really doesn't help that part of what I do for a living (as a writer) involves imagining worst case scenarios.

Would love to be pointed in the right direction to chat with people who've been where I suddenly find myself now.

Thank you!

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the Macmillan Community but sorry to hear about your ongoing diagnosis.

Navigating this journey can be such a stressful and challenging time but getting support from people who have walked or are walking the ‘exact same' journey can help a lot.

I have been in my Lymohoma rollercoaster for coming up to 25 years now and I will say that a number of years ago I had a biopsy on my tongue but it was not cancer.

The Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) so can I recommend that you look to join and put up your own post in our dedicated Head and Neck Cancer Support Group.

This group is a safe place to talk to others with a similar jourbey, treatment experience, to ask questions and get support. To connect in with the group please click on the link below…….

……. and once the group page opens you will see a [Black - Click to Join - Banner] at the bottom of the page, click in this box and this will then confirm that you have joined the group.

You can then introduce yourself to the group by putting up your very own post by clicking [+ Create new post] or [+] in the top right of the group page.

You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.

The Macmillan Support Line is open between 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00…… this service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support or just a listening ear.

Do get back to me if you need further help navigating the community…… all the very best.

  • Thank you so much, Mike, for the lovely welcome. I'm sorry to hear you've been on such a rollercoaster ride yourself.

I will indeed click that link and sign up. Cheers!

  • Hi there PP, thanks so much for the message.

Very glad to hear your tongue turned out to be a false alarm, but so sorry to hear about your new diagnosis. Yes, the worst case scenarios are terrible, aren't they. And I like your positive spin on it being a bonus if we don't reach those scenarios.

All the very best for your new diagnosis. Am crossing fingers aplenty for you.

  • Hey thankyou , they normally have a 2 week window to get biopsy done .. Polly
