Mother and potential throat cancer

My mother (59) had a lump appear on her throat in December of last year. I urged her to get it looked at. The GP surgery took bloods and waited five weeks before at her own behest they referred her to ENT. They made it clear a throat lump was an emergency.

She didn’t tell me right away as I was pregnant and gave birth, but now she’s told me she’s had an MRI, and during this she was given a consultation where the biopsy she had was inconclusive.

They wanted her to have a further more invasive biopsy and a CT scan. She was shown out to a nurse who said she is her designated MacMillan nurse. This terrified my mum - with no formal cancer diagnosis she was left with her mind to spiral.

I took her to the CT scan and today just Two days after the scan she received a phone call from a receptionist trying to book her for a biopsy and tonsil removal. She explained she knew nothing about this and they said they’d get the consultant to call her.

I am all my mum has and I’m terrified for her. I’m trying to be brave, it’s all moving so fast and it feels like they’ve already diagnosed her and all the hospital knows except us. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do, if she’s going to be okay and I’m scared of losing her.

  • Hi Lucritica, welcome to the Online Community always in unfortunate times, I’m as you see am a Community Champion I had throat cancer and have been in remission for 5 years this August, we all appreciate the shock you are suffering for your Mother, unfortunately she will have possibly lots of tests etc prior to a treatment plan so they get a full picture of her cancer, removal of tonsils indicates hopefully it’s confined but they won’t know until they have got all results, I’m sorry I can’t be more positive but we are all here for support if you wish further, you will be best placing a further post on the Head and Neck Forum :
