So recently my mum has been diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer, and they have found a lesion which may will be lung cancer. I'm really scared and don't know how to deal with this, I struggle to process emotions and really helps talking to people. I've told most of my friends and they have been super supportive - but my best friend of 15 years has abandoned me - he said he doesn't have the capacities to support me now and needs to work on himself (he broke up with his girlfriend of 2 years in December). I feel hurt and upset by this because I feel he is just ducking out of a hard time. I have enough to deal with and can't see how our friendship will recover from this. I'm not speaking to him and just want to move on but I just can't believe it. Just wondered what you think about this and if you have experienced this with friends abandoning in time of need?
I was also wondering how I could support my mum in these times? Anyone know what she might want? I live a couple of hours away so long distance suggestions would be wonderful. Thank you so much.
Hi Mineralsnotrocks and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I’m sorry to read that your mum has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and it's great that you want to find out the best way to support her.
The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the family and friends group where you'll connect directly with others who have a loved one with cancer to get support.
To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
It would be great if you could put something about your mum's diagnosis and proposed treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
