Lung cancer diagnosis for dad, no details from hospital since - what help can he get?

Hi. Thanks for letting me join the group.

My dad has been diagnosed with lung cancer after being referred by his GP, followed with a short stay in hospital.

He recently went to hospital to have a biopsy but was too frail for the doctors to continue. He has difficulty breathing, is sleeping all the time and cant walk as he has a problem with his foot. He is also not driving either. He seems to have let himself go over the last few years.

My query is…… I’ve had nothing from the hospital to say how bad the cancer is and there doesnt seem to be a treatment plan in place. I’m really struggling with the lack of communication.

Also can he get help with shopping and going to the surgery/hospital? I nor my siblings near him.

thank you

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m sorry to read that your dad has recently been diagnosed with lung cancer and you're finding it hard to obtain information about his treatment plan from his hospital.

Has your dad given permission to his consultant to discuss his diagnosis, etc with you? If so, has he given you the contact details of his cancer nurse specialist (CNS), sometimes referred to as a keyworker or Macmillan nurse. The CNS is your point of contact at the hospital and should be able to tell you what's happening. If your dad doesn't have the details for the CNS, then a quick call to his consultant's secretary will provide you with their details.

The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the lung cancer group, which is a great place to ask questions and share experiences about your dad's cancer, and also the family and friends group where you can discuss your worries and concerns.

To join, just click on the links I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your dad's diagnosis into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'.
