Colon cancer & Crohn’s Disease

I have recently discovered that my husband’s birth father died from colon cancer. My husband, himself, had stage 2 colon cancer 12 years ago, successfully treated by surgery and chemotherapy. Last year my 41 year old son was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. The discovery about the grandfather’s cancer only came today. I have 3 sons - two aged 41 and one aged 44. I am now very concerned about the possible hereditary factor as two previous generations had it and I am most concerned about my son with Crohn’s. Obviously my son with Crohn’s has undergone colonoscopies recently. Should my two other sons be having any kind of screening. They are obviously under the age for automatic testing. My husband was 68 when he had it. The grandfather was 78 and died one year after diagnosis. Thank you.

  • I have similar issues. All family members should check for colonoscopy. At least when they reach 40 years old

  • Thank you for your reply. This is what I thought.

  • Would this be automatically available on the NHS if they requested it?

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

It's natural that you might wonder if your sons should have screening for bowel cancer with several close family members having had it.

The online community is divided into different support groups and I can see that you've already found and joined the bowel cancer group which would be the perfect place to post this question.

When you're ready you can start a new post there in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

If you have any problems navigating the community just get back to me and I'll be pleased to help.
