I have recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer but it’s thankfully gleason 6 (3+3) which is low risk.
Nonetheless my urologist is recommending radical prostatectomy and a second opinion recommended the same. This seems to have a significant risk (approx. 10%) of permanent incontinence and a high risk (30-50%) of permanent impotence.
My own research (I know, I know – I shouldn’t!) leads me to believe that active surveillance of a Gleason 6 is often recommended since it progresses slowly, if at all, and allows for any developments to be dealt with if they arise.
The urologist’s argument is that it’s best to nip the risk in the bud before it has a chance to progress and while you’re still fit enough to have surgery (I’m 67). That is true of course, but there’s those side effects…
I should add that I am British but live abroad where the approach may differ, so I’d appreciate any feedback from anyone in a similar situation.
Hello Duggie (Duggieboy)
A warm welcome to the Macmillan Online Community, although I am so sorry to find you here. I am Brian one of the Community Champions here at Macmillan and indeed am on the fourth year of my personal Prostate Cancer journey.
Our community is divided into cancer specific groups or forums and I would advise you to join us on the Prostate group where you will meet others on the same or similar journey - here's the link:
Once the page opens up, just click on "join" on the black banner at the bottom of the page. Once you have joined us you can either copy and past or repost your original post in the "new here -say hello" section of the group. You are assured of a warm welcome and plenty of advice - living outside the UK isn't an issue.
I look forward to "meeting" you again in "our" part of the Community.
Best wishes - Brian.
