Hi. I'm 71 and my smears have been showing hpv abnormal cells for several years now. I attend colposcopy annually but my consultant says the colposcopy is becoming more difficult each year due to my age. Since the virus doesn't appear to be clearing itself I have now been offered a hysterectomy to get rid of it once and for all.
On reading the comments here I'm wondering why I haven't been offered the 'loop' treatment first. Could it be that my consultant feels it inappropriate due to my age? On reading the paperwork on the possible problems following hysterectomy I'm really quite frightened, because at the moment I'm a relatively fit 71 year old. I'm scared it's going to knock me for six.
Has anyone got a similar story or any input to offer? And has anyone got any comments to make on the hysterectomy op?
Thank you.
Hi Sandra71 and welcome to Macmillan
This “new to the community” group is where we look to direct you to the right group where you can chat to others with the same experiences, so I’d like to suggest that you join us in the cervical cancer group. This is the link
This is the group where we discuss hpv and treatment and also where ladies who have had hysterectomies for abnormal cervical cells with persistent hpv can share their experiences. I hope you’ll find answers to your questions there, and look forward to seeing you with us. When you click on the link I have provided, it will take you there and you can click on the black banner to join in the same way as you have joined this group.

Hi. Can they not do it endoscopically? I have a friend in her late sixties who had just that done and she spent one night in hospital.
