Tooth decay 6 years after Radiotherapy to neck

Hi, I'm seeking advice and direction.

I had cancer diagnosis, surgery and radiation therapy with tumour on base of tongue. After surgery my teeth were loose both top and bottom. Since then I had all top teeth removed and denture fitted at Liverpool University Dentist Hospital. My lower jaw has never been seen other than removal of teeth prior to Radiotherapy.

To date I have looked after my remainder of teeth, however due to lack of saliva, loose teeth and remainder on lower jaw have become diseased. I have not been able to pay private nor register with NHS dentist since moving area. My gums have receded to the bone and are really bad, discoloured and loose.

I'm hoping I can have all extracted and full dentures fitted that actually fit.

Can anyone help with advice and guidance please?

  • Hi Karen. I am Dani and I hang out in the Head and Neck Cancer Forum  Click one the ink and join us there.

In the meantime even though you have been discharged from routine review you are still on Patient Initiated Follow Up  (PIFU) at the hospital that treated you. Contact your old CNS , explain your position and you should be referred to the dental hospital in your area.

I am in the process of moving away. I asked a similar question of my oncologist when I was discharged. He said no oncologist would refuse another and to simply get in touch with my CNS
