Sister Triple Negative Breast Cancer spread to bones

Sister called tonight.

She had a lump and got results from Dr today.

It's Triple Negative Breast Cancer.

They said it's spread to organs & bones.

They said nothing will fix it- that chemo will only slow it down if she responds to chemo otherwise palliative care.

If chemo works, it's then a race to see what will kill her first. The Cancer or the Chemo.

As soon as she stops chemo, the Cancer will rapidly grow again.

I don't understand.

NHS said that you can treat this Cancer.

I don't understand.

She doesn't even feel sick.

Are doctors in NZ just being stupid? Are they behind in Cancer research?

I don't understand how this isn't treatable.

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m sorry to read that your sister has recently been diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer which has spread to other areas of her body. This is called secondary breast cancer and you may find this information from Macmillan on understanding secondary breast cancer helpful in explaining why your sister's hospital team have recommended the treatment that she will be having. Secondary breast cancer is when cancer cells spread from the breast to other parts of the body. When this happens the cancer is usually no longer curable but it is treatable meaning that your sister will receive treatments to keep the cancer under control.

The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the secondary breast cancer group, which is a great place to ask questions, share experiences and get support from others whose breast cancer has spread to other parts of their body.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your sister's diagnosis and proposed treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
