Finished last round of chemotherapy

I finished my last round of chemotherapy for breast cancer last week and I felt so happy. I rung the bell and it was done. But a week on I feel so low, I knew the side effects would be with me for a while but they seem much worse, I'm not sleeping properly, I have problems with my mouth and now I've pins and needles in my hands and feet. I feel so pathetic I know things will get better but I feel so scared. My husband is absolutely amazing and supportive but I'm just a sobbing wreak and I don't know what to do. I've been really positive till now but I feel broken.

  • Hi Cazzie24

Sending you a massive hug. While my cancer is different to yours I can relate to your feelings. Some cancer charitys offer counselling, that may be something you want to look into. You have been through a lot and the mental side doesn't seem to get addressed. There was another post by Alirobbo called coping after cancer saying much the same as you and one of the reply has a link to an article about after treatment finishes, it may help, I haven't read it yet. More hugs. Xx

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community and I was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2022 so have a good idea what you're probably feeling right now.

The online community is divided into different support groups and I can see that you've already found and joined the breast cancer group, which is a great place to ask questions, share experiences and get support.

When you feel ready to introduce yourself there, just start a new post in the same way as you did here. You can also join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

Have you spoken to the chemo unit about the side effects that you're experiencing? They may well be able to help with those and also point you in the direction of help for how you're feeling mentally.

Up until a short while ago Macmillan was able to provide 4 free counselling sessions through Bupa for people who were struggling with the emotional affects of a cancer diagnosis. Unfortunately, due to funding cuts, this is no longer possible but you could give the Support Line a call on 0808 808 0000 and have a chat to one of the Macmillan nurses who I'm sure would be able to point you in the right direction. They're available every day of the year between 8am and 8pm, so why don't you give them a call now.

It would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

    ((hugs))
