Hi I don’t even know if I should be in here and please accept my apology if I shouldn’t but I didn’t know where else to go for some advice and I’m a great believer in the best person to advise anyone is someone who  as actually experienced it . So any advice is much appreciated. Last week on a dental checkup which  I have every 3 months my dentist noticed a white patch and a red sore Patch which she said she hadn’t noticed 3 months ago and had I to which I replied no it wouldn’t be something I check when brushing my teeth . She has referred me to the hospital for a biopsy and she said I’m not overly worried about the white patch which she said was Lukoplakia I’m more worried about the red one . And then said I’ll see you in 3 months , so I left after making my next appointment, I came home and looked on the nhs website where I then found out the name of the red lesion Enthryplakia so I then went on you tube watching various videos and to be honest I’m still no further forward, so was hoping for some advice maybe I’m to early as I’ve not even had a biopsy yet when you are probably going through the worst time of your lives and I’m worried about a test sorry .

  • Hi

Both leukoplakia and erythroplakia are potentially pre cancerous lesions which is why your dentist has sent you for a biopsy. Fingers crossed they aren't cancer. They will need treating nevertheless so it's good that she is on the ball and has got you seen. I know it's a worry but all you can do is try to keep busy and now stay off the internet looking at these conditions.

Find out the name of the department your dentist has referred you to. It will likely be maxillofacial. If you haven't heard from them in two weeks chase them.

  • I received my appointment for the hospital for a biopsy it’s on Thursday 20/02/25 . I’m not sure what happens at this appointment would be grateful if someone could tell me thanks .

  • Hi. You'll likely get a biopsy under local anaesthesia which is uncomfortable that's all. It will make your mouth sore when the anaesthetic wears off but over the counter pain killers should help. Ask if you can have a prescription for Difflam which is a topical NSAID. Results usually take two to three weeks.
