Well my name is Cindy and I recently had a hospital stay from a fall I had and in the process of them testing to make sure I had no fractures or broken bones in back the did c t scans from head to waist and discovered a mass on the bottom of my right kidney .  So in the process a cancer doctor came and gave me his card and I had to see him when I got out of hospital so then he set me up with a urologist here where that Dr discussed the c t scan and him and the cancer doctor are 90,,%sure it is renal cell carcinoma. My question is this my urologist suggested I get a partial kidney removed but my family and I come to same agreement if removing the whole kidney so I would only have to go through it one time. Now do I as a patient have the right to have the whole kidney removed if that is what I want and can the doctor sign an agreement to what type of surgery I want so that he can't go back in it and do a partial when I want the whole thing out.?

  • Hi Cindy

I have RCC too but it had spread to my lungs before it was discovered so I never had the nephrectomy discussion.  There's a group for kidney cancer  Kidney cancer forum  - come along and join us and chat with people who have the same experiences.

Regarding your question, I think you agree the objective of the surgery and they are duty-bound to do that, unless they find new significant concerns.   Everyone has to sign a document I believe, before surgery.    I don't think it's very common to have a partial and then a full nephrectomy a bit later on.  I know some surgeries are borderline and they approach it like "try for a partial, but might end up as a full, depending on what's found".   Best discuss your concerns with the consultant,
