  • Hi my husband has metastic lung cancer from throat cancer diagnosed 2 years ago, he was operated on then had radical radiotherapy then lymph nodes removed from his neck, but then after a full body scan lung nodules were discovered  so was watched and waited until one grew big enough to biopsy, it was confirmed just before Christmas that it was metastic cancer from the throat, and the only thing they have offered is imunotherapy so I an on hear to ask for any positive sides to this  treatment because all we were told was the worst scenario including death, he has to.make up his mind and he's in a terrible dilemma, can anyone tell us of any positives in this treatment? Thanking you all kindly x

  • Hi Elizabeth, as mentioned, I also had oropharyngeal cancer that subsequently spread to both lungs,so quite similar to your husband's diagnoses. I started the immunotherpay drug Pembrolizumab around Nov 2021 and ended my 2 year course in Nov 2023. Whilst I was also very scared of the potential side effects, I thankfully had very few, and at the moment am showing 'no evidence of disease' in my 3-monthly scans, and it's been like that for over a year now. So what was a terminal diagnosis has turned into something different (and of course much better!)

The side effects can be horrendous and very serious, as you state, but patients are carefully monitored for these. And recent research has shown that even a reduced stint on Pembro can still lead to longer life expectancy.

Like many others I kept a blog of my treatment, but I'd be more than happy to answer any questions you might have.
