Hi everyone. This is all very new to me.
Within the last week my mum has been diagnosed with colorectal cancer which has likely spread to her lungs. This has come as a huge shock. And on top of that she isn't well enough for any form of treatment and wouldn't survive surgery (she's young but is very frail due to other health conditions etc).
I work in healthcare so I'm worried about how I'll cope at work.
Anyone got any advice on how they have supported others and themselves through this? What has worked for you ? As someone with cancer or helping support those with it?
My younger brother and dad is also really finding this hard to wrap their heads around everything and understandably so.
Thank you in advance
Hi Keebriel and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community, and I know what an impact having someone with cancer in the family can be. Although in my case I was the one with cancer.
The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join either the carers only group, if you are your mum's carer, or the family and friends group, if you're not her carer. Both groups are great places to share your worries and get support.
To join, just click on the appropriate link that I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
It would be great if you could put something about your mum's diagnosis into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
